Abstract

The British cinematographic movement of the late 1950s and early 1960s became known as the “British New Wave”. Despite the fact that important dramas for the history of world cinema were produced during this film cycle, they received little attention from film critics and academic researchers. Like the British New Wave, John Carney’s works were also not widely explored as objects of analysis. Carney is an Irish screenwriter and film director who specializes in independent, low-budget films and the musical genre. Thematic and technical analogies were identified between this British film style and some works by the Irish filmmaker. Therefore, this article aims to study the films Once (2007) and Sing Street (2016), by John Carney, and their convergence points with the works of the British New Wave. The methodology used for the development of the paper was based on a literary review in books and scientific and journalistic articles. It can be seen, in this study, that the two films analyzed have points in common with the style of the films released in Great Britain between 1959 and 1963, known as the British New Wave.
